MONROE, N.C. — A woman is in custody after a chase ended in a crash Thursday morning in Monroe.

All lanes of U.S. 74 near Highway 601 South in Monroe were shut down after the crash, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. They said it happened at the end of a chase around 1:30 a.m.

Authorities said it started when a trooper found a silver Toyota going 117 mph on U.S. 74 near the Mecklenburg County line. The trooper tried to stop the car but the driver fled.

The chase went through Monroe and ended when the driver hit a utility pole, bringing down the power lines, investigators said. That car also hit another car.

The driver, 21-year-old Makayla Wall, jumped from the car and ran but was eventually taken into custody.

Wall is charged with the following: Felony fleeing to elude, going 117 mph in a a 55 mph zone, and no operator’s license. She was taken to the Union County jail and given a $100,000 bond.

The westbound lanes of Highway 74 had reopened when Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew overhead around 11:15 a.m. Thursday. Officers with the Monroe Police Department were directing traffic.

No estimate was given on when repairs to the utility pole and power lines would be completed, but workers said it could take all day Thursday.
