NEWLAND, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation has been sending out vehicles equipped with plows as snow began falling late Friday morning in the mountains.
Some vehicles have spreaders attached that disperse sand and dirt onto snow-covered roads.
The higher elevations are expecting several inches of snow as a major blast of cold and high winds approaches the region.
There is a concern that many roads and secondary roads that were patched up with sand and gravel after Helene could break apart because of the wintry conditions.
Temperatures could fall into the mid-teens Friday night.
