RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is advising people to double-check their policies and see what’s covered and what’s not.

This comes after an earthquake and a Category 1 hurricane hit the state within a week in August.

“Damage from earthquakes are generally not covered under most standard homeowners’ insurance policies,” Causey said. “However, homeowners can talk with their agents and easily add an earthquake endorsement to their policies. I also encourage consumers to get replacement coverage on both their homeowners’ and automobile insurance policies.”

Causey plans to visit Alleghany County on Monday, the epicenter of the earthquake, to meet with local officials and first responders.
