NC Highway Patrol-owned helicopter crashes onto Raleigh street; pilot survives

RALEIGH, N.C. — A helicopter belonging to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol crashed near its training academy in Raleigh Sunday afternoon, WTVD reported.

Officials said a pilot crashed the NCSHP-owned helicopter at around 2:15 p.m. on Tryon Road near Garner Road by the training center.

The pilot, Trooper B.K. Jones, was hurt in the crash and was the only person on the helicopter.

The NTSB, Federal Aviation Administration and the Patrol’s Reconstruction Unit are investigating the incident.

“We are truly grateful for the health and safety of Trooper B.K. Jones after today’s helicopter crash in Raleigh,” said Col. Glenn M. McNeill. “We are often reminded of the inherent dangers our members face as part of their daily pursuit to keep our communities safe. We look forward to a transparent investigation into today’s crash and we welcome all findings that we hope can further our quest for the safe operation of the Patrol’s Aviation Unit.”

The Highway Patrol and the local fire department responded to the scene.
