NC doles out $600M in jobless benefits, but many claims still unpaid

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina saw another 56,000 new unemployment claims filed last week as the number of jobless workers continues to pile up around the country.

As the unemployment rate continues to rise, the state is doling out a massive amount in benefits. This week, the state surpassed $600 million in payments — but that’s just the funds from the state’s reserves. When taking into account federal benefits, the figure is approaching $1.8 billion.

But what could be concerning is that, of the more than 1.1 million initial unemployment claims filed in North Carolina since mid-March, only around half have started to receive payments. Meaning that unless masses of people are able to return to work in the coming weeks, the state is going to start burning through its unemployment reserves at a much more rapid pace.
