NC DMV asking lawmakers for money to hire more employees

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

NORTH CAROLINA — The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is asking state lawmakers for money to hire more employees.

Our partners at The Charlotte Observer report the agency wants to hire an additional 61 workers to staff its offices, particularly in the Triangle and Charlotte areas.

The positions include license examiners and greeters.

The General Assembly sets the number of people who can work in driver’s license offices.

The DMV estimates it would cost about $4 million a year to reach full staffing.

The General Assembly reconvenes Wednesday. The budget is expected sometime this summer.
