CHARLOTTE — A natural gas leak has shut down South Boulevard in both directions Friday morning in south Charlotte.
Officials told Channel 9 that a third-party contractor hit the line around 12:15 a.m.

Channel 9 could see the gas fumes billowing from the ground.
Crews from Piedmont Natural Gas were on the scene and officials said they hoped to have the road reopened by the morning rush hour. As of 9:30 a.m., South Boulevard was still closed.
South Boulevard is blocked between Marsh Road and Poindexter Drive, and drivers are urged to avoid the area.
