GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Lincoln County officials have confirmed the mysterious material seen floating in the South Fork Catawba River on Tuesday afternoon was actually animal waste.
According to an update from the Gaston County Office of Emergency Management, lab tests showed on Wednesday that the water is safe for residents to resume normal activities.
According to a release, Lincoln County Emergency Management found the source of the leak and learned that it was animal waste that has overflowed from a nearby farm.

Officials do not know how much animal waste has spilled into the river at the time.
