CAPE LOOKOUT, N.C. — Researchers have identified the sea creatures that were found on the coast of North Carolina in July.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences researchers said the creatures are bristle worms, also known as polychaete worms.
These worms come from the family Amphinomidae, which also includes sea mice and fireworms.
The creatures are known as bristle worms because they have toxin coated spikes called seta. The spikes cover the worm’s body and can possibly be dangerous to people, officials said.
The toxin can also cause major skin irritation.
Bristle worms can grow on things in the ocean. In this case, the worms attached to a coconut which ended up near the North Carolina coast.
