CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — A concerned driver recorded what North Carolina troopers said is an impaired driver putting other people in serious danger.

The video, posted to YouTube, shows a car driving Sunday afternoon in the opposite lanes of Highway 601 near the Union and Cabarrus county line.

The video shows several cars swerving to avoid hitting the vehicle. Minutes later, it swerves off the right side of the road, hits an embankment and slams into a tree.

The video also showed the driver of the gold Toyota hitting a guardrail several times. Multiple people called 911 before the crash.

"They're going to kill themselves or somebody else. They are all over the road," one caller told a 911 dispatcher.

A second 911 caller said, “Something is bad wrong in that car. I don't know what it is, but something is wrong."

Troopers told Eyewitness News the driver was Joshua Nance from Marshville and he was on multiple illegal drugs.

"I've never seen a video leading up to a wreck like that before. It goes to show his impairment, " said Trooper Mitch Geracz. He arrived minutes after the crash and is the lead investigator.

"The rear of the vehicle hit 18 feet up into the tree," Geracz said. He says witnesses saw Nance crawl out of front passenger door after the crash and lay on the ground until help arrived.

“[The driver] did not know where he was. He could not tell me where he was coming from at the time of the wreck," Geracz said.

Thankfully, no one else was hurt.

Eyewitness News anchor Liz Foster checked the driver's record. Joshua Nance has never been convicted of a crime in North Carolina. He's recovering in a hospital and is charged with reckless driving and driving while impaired.
