Muslim community in Charlotte hands out meals to families while celebrating Ramadan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Muslims in Charlotte are finding new ways to celebrate Ramadan during the coronavirus pandemic.

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Then they have a breaking fast ceremony each evening that includes a meal.

Since congregations cannot gather, the Muslim Community Center of Charlotte served meals to families.

They planned on handing out meals for 45 minutes, but they ran out of meals in about 25 minutes.

“We were very please with the turnout. It shows that the community is really interested in reconnecting and kindling back with us,” said member Azeem Elahi. “It shows us that just as much as we’re missing them, they’re missing us.”

Everyone involved was able to make this event happen within 24 hours. They said this couldn’t have been possible without the support from the leadership of the mosque.
