CHARLOTTE — As the temperatures plunge, water pipes across Charlotte are breaking – keeping crews busy, making repairs.
Channel 9′s Eli Brand said Charlotte Water officials are warning the issue could only get worse.
Work being done on Clanton Road addressed just one of the multiple pipes that burst across the Charlotte area Tuesday, causing water to gush down streets.
One woman who lives nearby told Channel 9 that she noticed the water early this morning.
“When my grandson was going to school this morning around 6:15, I noticed what I thought was black ice. I said somebody’s water thing has broken,” Rhonda Hampton said.
Charlotte Water crews worked to contain it and had to shut off water in the area for a few hours. So much water entered the street at one point, that a large puddle formed, forcing cars to drive through it.
Another area in the city facing a similar problem was on Fairview Road in south Charlotte.
Lanes there had to be closed and water was also shut off for a few hours while repairs were made.
With more freezing temperatures expected, Charlotte Water laid down salt on Clanton Road to prevent the water from freezing and to break up any ice that formed earlier in the morning.
Charlotte Water said these types of breaks are not unusual when temperatures drop, causing the ground to shift.
Officials said if you see water on the road, especially in freezing temperatures, you should drive slowly.
