Multi-county police chase ends in fiery crash on I-77 in SC; 2 in custody

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Two people are in custody after a multi-county police chase ended in a fiery crash in South Carolina, authorities said.

It began around noon Monday, when a Chester County Sheriff’s Office deputy tried to pull a speeding car over on Highway 9. Deputies said the car didn’t stop, so they chased it across northern Chester County.

The chase stretched into York County, where deputies there also joined.

The car eventually crashed and caught fire on Interstate 77 just north of Carowinds Boulevard. The area is near the North Carolina state line.

Deputies took two people into custody.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, the incident stemmed from a carjacking in the town of Irmo.

No further information was released.
