CHARLOTTE — The sound of jazz is back in uptown Charlotte. Middle C Jazz, a live music venue that offers seated food and drink service, is slated to host more than a dozen live performances in July. Before anyone can enter the venue, they must undergo strict COVID-19 protocols, which includes a temperature check, mandatory use of hand sanitizer and patrons are waved down with a UV light wand.
"I am taking it seriously, because I value the lives of every customer that comes in, every great musician and every server," owner Larry Farber said.
Bringing Middle C Jazz to uptown is a dream come true for Farber. Middle C Jazz serves food and drinks, but the star is the music.
"I want it to be about the group that is playing in the center of the stage with all the best sound, all the best lighting and featuring local and world-class artists," Farber said.

In order to the keep the music playing, Farber is not taking any shortcuts. Orange tape on the floor dictates where people can walk. His venue is only open at about 25% capacity. Farber keeps the doors open during the show so people can sit outside if they feel more comfortable.
"When people come in, if they feel safe, then they are going to tell their friends about coming here," he said. "The musicians are going to do the same thing. I want them to all feel good."
In a COVID-crazed world it's easy to feel overwhelmed, stressed and scared. Farber hopes each performance helps sooth and heal the anxiety of the unknown.

"Through all of the crises we have faced in the last three or four months, my sanctuary is to come into this room and hear these wonderful musicians playing and for 90 minutes. I honestly forget about everything going on," he said. "If you come in with that mindset, I promise you will leave with a smile on your face you will feel better. Hopefully you will feel better for the next several days, but you will feel better."
