CHARLOTTE — The family of fallen Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer Mia Goodwin does not have to pay their mortgage anymore, thanks to one organization.
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation paid off the mortgage on the home of Officer Goodwin, who was killed in the line of duty on Dec. 22, 2021 just days after returning from maternity leave and days before Christmas.
Police said a semi-truck with a trailer collided with another semi (cab only) heading southbound on Interstate 85, and that collision then caused them to crash into CMPD units who were working another accident scene. Goodwin, 33, was killed and three other officers were hurt.
CMPD said it has charged one of the truck drivers, 50-year-old Daniel Leon Morgan, for his involvement in the deadly crash. He was indicted by a grand jury earlier this month.
Since the tragic collision, Channel 9 has seen an outpouring of support for Goodwin’s husband and three children.
Officer Goodwin served in the University Division of CMPD. Her husband, Brenton Goodwin, serves as a Charlotte firefighter at Fire Station 5.

“This is a family of first responders, a husband and wife dedicated to serving and protecting their community,” said Frank Siller, Chairman and CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. “It is now our turn to step up and do the same for them. I was honored to tell Brenton that he will be able to stay in the home their family shared forever without the financial burden of a mortgage.”
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s “Fallen First Responder Home Program” pays-off the mortgages for the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty with young children. The organization is dedicated to honoring the sacrifice of FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001.
