SEATTLE, Wash. — More than 4,000 items considered unsafe are being sold on Amazon, according to a Wall Street Journal investigation.
Among the items, at least 2,000 toys and medications that didn't have warnings about health risks to children. Amazon didn't dispute the report, but posted the steps the company takes to vet products, the investigation found.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission can go after a brick-and-mortar store if it fails to report a defective product or sells a recalled one. It can also go after a company that makes a bad product.
An online company like Amazon doesn't fall under either of those categories.
“This article raises real concerns about whether Amazon is profiting from widespread deception on its platform,” federal trade commissioner Rohit Chopra tweeted. “Deceptive acts or practices can threaten our health and safety, and are unlawful under the FTC act.”
