MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into a police-involved shooting in Mooresville.
Police said a 911 call from a cell phone about a possible break-in sent two officers to the scene.
Tasha Kirby still can't believe her boyfriend, Dicky Hamby, is hospitalized after being shot by police outside the home where the couple lives in Mooresville.
“I'm very worried,” Kirby said. “It worries me sick. I hope and pray nothing happens to him.”
Kirby said she was inside when police showed up Wednesday night, responding to a call about a disturbance involving a person trying to break into a residence. She didn't see the shooting but said officers told her Hamby was acting in a threatening manner.
“Supposedly he just had a shirt in his hand, or his hands were up under his shirt, and that's what made them think he had a weapon and then told them he was going to shoot them,” Kirby said.
Police said they fired twice, hitting Hamby in the stomach.
Officers said since March, they have responded to the home five times. But during part of that time, Hamby was in jail for driving with a revoked license and misdemeanor drug possession. Eyewitness News also found he was convicted of assaulting a woman in 2000.
But his friends said those brushes with the law don't describe the man they know or explain what happened Wednesday night.
“He's a good guy. He was good. Do anything for you,” one friend said.
Police are not saying whether Hamby had a gun.
His girlfriend said he underwent surgery at CMC and was awake Thursday afternoon.
Both officers are on paid administrative leave while the SBI investigates.
