MOORESVILLE, N.C. — The Mooresville Police Department said it's bogged down by illegal prescription drug cases, part of an ongoing struggle statewide.
"Charlotte, Huntersville, Mooresville, everybody is experiencing this problem," said MPD crime analyst Dan Miglin.
He said there is a lot of paperwork when battling the problem.
"That's why we have to have an officer dedicate their time to this," Miglin said. "It's not something you can do in an hour."
The department is now seeking nearly a $500,000 in grants to hire a detective for those cases and to build stronger cases.
Mooresville resident Sandy Tabor-Gray overcame her drug addiction as a teen but years later, her son, who was a young father, faced the same demons.
“And I saw the light under the door and I said, ‘I think your dad’s awake, let’s go in,’” Tabor-Gray said. “And we go in and he had died. Life unraveled at that point.”
She is now a counselor and helps agencies in Mooresville and across the state, along with families like her own.
Her son knew his struggle, was treated many times but lost the fight
"And he cried all the way there (to treatment), so you can imagine, and 18-year-old young man, crying, desperate to feel different, but not knowing if he could really do it. He knew."
