CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Monroe Road in southeast Charlotte is shut down after a crash took out a power pole Wednesday morning, according to police.
The crash happened around 1 a.m. near 7th Street, strewing power lines across the road.
Duke Energy crews are on the scene making repairs, but officers urge motorists to seek an alternate route for their morning commute.
The driver was taken to the hospital, but it was unclear how badly they were hurt.
Monroe Road was blocked in both directions from Firefighter Place to Dunn Avenue.
Duke Energy officials told Channel 9 that customers in the area will lose power at some point while they make repairs, and expect a portion of the road to be closed through the afternoon.
They said the pole that was hit is connected to underground wires that feed into a medical campus. Crews told Channel 9 that repairs will be delayed because the car is sitting on top of where the pole was and it needs to be removed before they can go underground to look at the potential damage.
