There are concerns about missing money at St. Joseph Vietnamese Catholic Church.
Two church members told Channel 9 that more than $13,000 disappeared after a food fundraiser in the spring. The congregation wasn't told until 2 months later and the delay made them suspicious.
"We conducted an audit, worked with the bank examiners and the police during the intervening two months," said the director of communications for the Diocese of Charlotte David Hains.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department learned that on April 3, six bags were set to be dropped off at Wells Fargo. The investigating officer reviewed surveillance video and found that only five bags were dropped off.
However, CMPD is still investigating all options and hasn’t filed any charges.
The diocese said insurance will cover the total loss, but some parishioners worry this may not have been the first time money has gone missing.
Church members said the monetary amount reported for that week in the church bulletin was around $5,000 not $13,000 so they question the discrepancy.
The diocese told Channel 9 they must be confusing those numbers with another report.
