Military jets fly low Monday over uptown

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 received dozens of calls, tweets and messages on Facebook Monday morning after military jets flew low over Huntersville, uptown and Bank of America Stadium.

Four A-10C Thunderbolt II’s from the 74th Fighter Squadron at Moody Air Force Base took off from Charlotte Douglas International Airport at 11:30 a.m. Monday and flew over the Carolina Panthers Stadium at low altitude, U.S. Air Force officials said.

The pilots were conducting routine navigation training from Charlotte to Moody and not participating in the U.S. Air Force’s flyover support to the National Football League.

Charlotte airport officials originally told Channel 9 that the jets were practicing for flyovers at Bank of America Stadium.

On Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration released a statement that corrected the airport's original statement.

"The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is looking into reports that a flight of four U.S. Air Force A-10 aircraft flew at a low altitude over the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC, late this morning.  FAA Air Traffic Controllers approved the pilots' request to fly over the stadium after they departed from Charlotte Douglas International Airport at 11:35 am.  The flight was headed to Valdosta, GA. An FAA employee incorrectly told an official at Charlotte Douglas International Airport that the flight was a practice flyover for a football game."
