Metals processor planning large new facility in region

MONROE, N.C. — A Pittsburgh-based company has bought 124 acres next to its plant in Monroe with plans for a 210,000-square-foot facility that would supply metals for the aerospace industry.

TDY Industries, a unit of Allegheny Technologies Inc. (NYSE: ATI), is going through the state permitting processes to build near Allegheny’s current ATI Specialty Materials plant. The site is east of the intersection of Airport and Goldmine roads in Monroe, 22 miles from uptown Charlotte.

The building carries the code name “Project Albert,” according to applications filed for wetlands remediations and for other purposes with the state of North Carolina and with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office in Charlotte.

“The purpose of this project is to construct a manufacturing facility to serve the aerospace industry,” the application states.

The TDY building would add to one of North Carolina’s largest concentration of aerospace manufacturers that calls the Monroe area its home. In June, Monroe estimated it had 24 aerospace firms in the area that employ a total of 4,500.
