From Arlington, Virginia to the Carolinas, we’re remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice this Memorial Day.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Later on Monday, President Biden gave his Memorial Day address.
Closer to home, the Kannapolis Memorial Day ceremony began around noon at Veteran’s Park. Army Major General Charles Swannack Jr. spoke there.
Early Monday, in uptown Charlotte, hundreds of motorcyclists hit the road to remember those who gave their lives in service. Bikers who participated said it’s all about pushing to make our country a better place for future generations.
“The beating in our heart should be louder than any motor bikes and gives us the drive to be better Americans and be better citizens to each other,” Ralph Serrapica told Channel 9.
The group is on the way to the Carolina Field of Honor in Kernersville, near Winston-Salem.
The appreciation for the holiday began one day early in York County. On Sunday, veterans visited the resting place of fallen servicemembers. The event included the unveiling of a new plaque to recognize fallen veterans.
Organizers say it’s important to remember those who died fighting for our freedom.
“So many people left and did not come home,” said organizer Ronnie Taylor. “We’re losing people every day now that did not come home. It means a lot that we can honor those people.”
The memorial plaque is up at Veteran’s Park in Fort Mill. They invite people to stop by and see it anytime.
Channel 9 is part of Cox Media Group Television (CMG). CMG is joining forces with Veteran Jobs Mission in an effort to help 2 million servicemembers and their families find and keep employment. To learn more, click here.
