CHARLOTTE, NC — Meckleburg County held a ribbon cutting ceremony for MEDIC's new $48 million headquarters Wednesday.

It's located off Wilkinson Boulevard and is designed to last for at least 20 years.

Staff moved in a few weeks ago, but Wednesday, county leaders had their first chance to check out what the taxpayer dollars paid for.

"This is absolutely money well spent. This is an investment in our community. It's an investment in our future," said Mecklenburg County Manager Dena Diorio.

Major improvements were made to the 911 call center. Only 14 dispatchers could fit in the old building, but now there's room for 22 and counting.

There's training space where paramedics can practice real-life situations like an active shooter or car accident.

"We are very unique and blessed with the technology that we are able to do that right here at our headquarters," said MEDIC Deputy Director Kevin Staley.

600 employees now work at the new building and Diorio told us he believes that will have an economic impact on the area.
