CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police were investigating after they said a man was struck and killed by a vehicle in north Charlotte early Monday morning.
The collision happened just before 7:30 a.m. on Statesville Avenue, just north of Atando Avenue.
Officers confirmed to Channel 9 that the man who was hit, 39-year-old Lewis Lairsey, died at the scene.
His friend told Channel 9 that Lairsey was walking across Statesville Avenue to catch a bus when the car hit him.
“He was taking his last breaths and then the police came and told everybody to get away from him,” said Jason Daye. “I thought he was going to make it but he didn't.”
Investigators said that a Mazda driven by Ronald Shipes was traveling south on Statesville Avenue when Lairsey walked into the path of the car and was struck.
Police said Lairsey was not in a crosswalk.
The inbound lanes of Statesville Avenue were closed for an hour while police investigated.
No charges have been filed.
