Driver identified in deadly crash with CATS bus in south Charlotte, police say

CHARLOTTE — A man who died after a crash with a Charlotte Area Transit System bus in south Charlotte on Wednesday was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Officers said they responded before 9:30 a.m. to South Tryon Street near Garden Oaks Lane for a crash between a 2001 Dodge Dakota and CATS bus 2128.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the crash where a pickup truck could be seen in the road with significant front-end damage behind the bus.

Robert Compton, 32, was identified as the driver of the truck. CMPD said he suffered serious injuries and died at the scene despite receiving aid from MEDIC.

Police said the CATS bus did not have any passengers on board at the time of the crash and the driver was not hurt.

According to a preliminary investigation, CMPD said the CATS bus had just dropped off two passengers and was stopped at the bus stop in the right lane. Compton was traveling in the same direction and crashed into the back of the bus.

Compton was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to police.

The bus driver was not believed to be impaired, police said. Compton’s toxicology results are pending.

Investigators are working to determine if speed contributed to the crash, detectives said.
