CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Mecklenburg County's first African-American district attorney was sworn in Monday in Charlotte.
Spencer B. Merriweather, III, replaces Andrew Murray, who President Donald J. Trump selected in October as U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.
“I’m confident that the people of Mecklenburg are going to have a strong leader that will protect them,” Murry said.
Gov. Roy Cooper appointed Merriweather to serve as interim district attorney on Oct. 31.
Merriweather’s swearing-in ceremony was held at the District Attorney’s Office on East Trade Street.
“I come to that with a great deal of pride,” Merriweather said. “I also come with a great deal of perspective. I know exactly what it means to feel shut out of the system.”
