Mecklenburg County shelters to activate extreme weather protocols

MECKELNBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Mecklenburg County will be activating its extreme weather protocols, which include additional capacity at area homeless shelters.

These protocols are expected to be in effect from Friday, January 10, until Sunday, January 12.

County leaders said they will be working with the city of Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management Office, Roof Above, the Salvation Army Center of Hope, Hearts for the Invisible, and Block Love Charlotte to support those who are experiencing homelessness during this extreme weather event.

Roof Above’s Day Services Center on North College Street will be operating from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. This shelter also provides shelter for men and expanded capacity beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The Salvation Army will be providing shelter for women and families and expanding capacity at their shelter location on Spratt Street from 4:30 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Block Love Charlotte’s Day Services Center on North Graham Street will operate daily from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Hearts for the Invisible Coalition will continue to deploy street outreach teams to homeless encampments to encourage anyone living unsheltered to visit a shelter and to provide information on how to access shelter. Those who decline shelter will be provided blankets if needed.

Charlotte Area Transit System announced their buses will transport individuals to these shelter locations free of charge Friday through Sunday. Riders must simply identify a designated shelter location for the driver.
