Mecklenburg County early voting numbers soaring

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — This is the last week to cast your vote early for the November midterm elections.

Voter turnout is soaring at early voting locations in Mecklenburg County and other areas across the country.

Nearly 10,000 people have voted at a SouthPark location in the past week and a half.

Eyewitness News reporter Mark Barber found more people are voting this year compared to the last midterm election in 2014.

This year’s numbers are significant because the race for the U.S. House is the biggest ticket on the ballot, and those races don’t usually spark a large voter turnout.

The big debate is whether Republicans or Democrats will benefit the most from early voters.

So far, 110,307 people have voted early in Mecklenburg County, which is about one third of the early voting numbers during the 2016 presidential election.

President Donald Trump traveled to Charlotte Friday to advocate for Republican Mark Harris, who is running for the 9th congressional district against Democrat Dan Mccready.

Channel 9 dug through the statewide numbers and found turnout for Democrats is highest right now at 43 percent, followed by Republicans and unaffiliated voters.
