CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office said a detention officer was terminated Friday after being charged with sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Vanquez DeVonte Petty, 31, has been charged with second-degree rape and second-degree sexual assault.

Police said the crime happened Feb. 28. They said Petty and the teenager met and exchanged phone numbers. They arranged to meet at the victim’s home, and that’s when police said Petty sexually assaulted the victim. Police said she was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police said the incident did not happen while Petty was on duty as a detention officer.
The Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying, in part: “As a public safety organization, all employees of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office are required to demonstrate professional and ethical conduct both on and off-duty. Any misconduct or violation of the law will not be tolerated by MCSO.”
