Meck County runs out of free at-home COVID test kits at local libraries

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Health officials are no longer offering free at-home COVID-19 test kits at various libraries throughout Mecklenburg County.

“At this time, due to high demand ahead of the holidays, COVID-19 at-home test kits are no longer available at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library distribution sites,” the county said in a release on Wednesday. “Due to nationwide supply chain issues, the number of test kits available changes on a daily basis.”

The kits had been available to residents who have a difficult time accessing local testing sites or can’t buy an at-home test online or at a nearby pharmacy or department store. Community members are permitted to pick up one test kit per member of their household per week.

“Based on the circumstances that we are seeing, it seems to be a smart thing to do to have some tests on hand,” resident Suzi Rosen said.

The kits were available for curbside pickup at designated library branches and public health locations while supplies last.

“I know a lot of people have been picking them up at different places, and we are all grateful to have it,” Rosen said.

The county was offering Ellume, iHealth and LabCorp Pixel COVID-19 tests. According to the FDA, they all have an accuracy rate of over 90%. Tests are provided by NCDHHS to Public Health and are paid for by state and federal COVID-19 funding streams.

You do not need to make an appointment or show an ID to receive a kit, and a prescription from a health care provider is also not required.

Locations distributing the at-home test kits include:

Mecklenburg County Public Health – Southeast

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
  • Wednesdays: 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library – North County Regional

  • Mondays and Wednesdays: 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
  • Fridays: 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
  • Sundays: 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library - West Boulevard

  • Mondays and Wednesdays: 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
  • Fridays: 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library – Hickory Grove

  • Mondays and Wednesdays: 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
  • Fridays: 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library – Steele Creek

  • Mondays and Wednesdays: 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.
  • Fridays: 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Library – South Boulevard
