Meck County closes some Parks and Rec facilities through end of January

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Mecklenburg County is closing some of its Parks and Recreation facilities through the end of January.

This comes after the county advised people to stay home unless they need to leave for essential activities for the next three weeks. Public Health Director Gibbie Harris said the changes are due to the increase in COVID-19 cases in Mecklenburg County.

“We are basically going back to where county services were during the Stay-at-Home order last spring,” said county manager Dena R. Diorio. “Our COVID numbers are going up, not down, so for the next three weeks, only essential and mandated services that cannot be performed virtually will be provided in-person.”

The county is closing the following facilities:

All recreation, senior and nature centers
Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center
Indoor shelters
Camping at McDowell Nature Preserve
The Grayson SkatePark at Naomi Drenan Recreation Center

Mecklenburg County officials also said parks will close at dusk, reservations are not being accepted for athletic fields and outdoor shelters are open on a first-come, first-served basis. Various programs and clinics may also be rescheduled or delayed, and people can contact the Public Health Hotline at 980-314-9400 for more details.
