CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One of Charlotte's most prominent law enforcement officers is now running for Mecklenburg County sheriff.

Garry McFadden spent 35 years at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department mostly as a homicide investigator.

McFadden's investigations are the focal point in the crime series, “I am Homicide,” which airs on Discovery ID.

McFadden has been nicknamed “The Mayor” because he was one of the most popular officers on the force.

Now he's trying to become the sheriff and he will take on Irwin Carmichael and Antonie Ensley in a crowded Democratic primary.

"After much prayer and thought, I've decided to humbly offer myself as your next Mecklenburg County sheriff,” he said. “This is an extension of the work I am currently doing in the community."
