CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Democratic 9th Congressional District candidate Dan McCready has refunded a donation from U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn.
Campaign finance records show McCready refunded Omar’s $2,000 donation on March 30. Omar donated the cash on Nov. 6.
A spokesperson said McCready refunded the donation because he believes there is no place for divisiveness in politics, and McCready did not feel it is appropriate to accept the donation.
Omar was elected to Congress in 2018.
McCready tweeted Wednesday night that he asked for the refund weeks ago. He said he disagrees with any anti-Semitic comments.
He acknowledged that since then, “dangerous and hateful attacks have started against her.”
He added, “I condemn, in the strongest terms, the hateful rhetoric against her, the Muslim community and people of color. Too many have been hurt by our broken politics. We must end hate speech against all people and groups.”
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump accused Omar on Twitter of making "anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and ungrateful U.S. HATE statements." The president's comments were in response to a video of Omar making comments that some viewed as dismissive of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

In February, Omar apologized for using anti-Semitic tropes after coming under fire for a series of tweets that critics said perpetuated stereotypes about Jewish people.
