MATTHEWS, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders continued discussing the controversial House bill that would allow the town of Matthews to operate its own charter school.
The majority of Matthews commissioners voted in support of House Bill 514 on Monday night
CMS put another formal statement against it Tuesday night.
School district officials said it offers no clear path for higher academic achievement and could increase taxes and segregation.
Superintendent Clayton Wilcox said it could ultimately affect student assignment for other students.
“We have to review all possibilities and as we lose students, we're going to have to make adjustments,” Wilcox said.
Matthews leaders have cited overcrowding as one of the reasons for the bill and said it gives parents more options.
They said it is not a bill to break away from CMS and if it becomes law, they'll do more research and get public input before moving forward.
