Man reported missing in York Co. found dead in woods

UPDATE: Harold Robert Helms, 59, who had been reported missing last week, has been found dead in York County, police told Channel 9 Sunday.
Police said Helms' body was found in a wooded area near where he was last seen and detectives are now treating the case as a death investigation.
No further information has been released at this time.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Friday, Oct. 9: Search teams were on the ground in York County are trying to find a man who disappeared Thursday.

The search for Harold Helms, 59, is focused along Highway 161 in York.

At 3:30 p.m. Friday, officials called off the search for the day.

Reporter Greg Suskin spoke to family members who said time is of the essence.

A mobile command post has been set up with members from the Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management.

Helms was last seen by his family Thursday around 4 p.m.

Search dogs were brought in and a South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division helicopter with heat-sending capability flew over the search area but found nothing.

Helms is diabetic, walks with a cane and has some mental issues, but does not suffer from dementia, family members said.

A close family member who looks after him said she believes he's still out there and that he's OK.

"I want him home. I know he's out there somewhere. He's got to be," the family member said.

Investigators are calling in other agencies to take part in this search, which stretches from the Clover area to York.
