Several fire trucks damaged after massive fire breaks out at Statesville business

STATESVILLE, N.C. — Firefighters are working to determine what caused a massive fire at an Iredell County store late Tuesday night.

The fire started around 9 p.m. at Crazy David’s Discount Variety Store along Sheldon Avenue in Statesville.

When firefighters got to the area, heavy smoke was coming from the business and flames were shooting from the roof and windows.

Officials said it took firefighters more than four hours to get the blaze under control. Crews from Troutman and nearby volunteer departments were called to help the Statesville Fire Department.

There were no injuries and no one was inside the business at the time of the fire.

Statesville Fire Chief Andy Weatherman said several fire trucks as well as utility poles and lines in the area were damaged because of the extreme heat of the blaze.

Authorities said crews were still on scene Wednesday morning to make sure the fire did not flame back up and Shelton Avenue was blocked off.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
