CHARLOTTE — A manufacturer that committed to employing over 100 people in the Charlotte region has ceased operations, and its assets have been thrown into receivership.
Mafic USA LLC, which made basalt fibers for a number of industries, has closed its manufacturing facility in Shelby. Iron Horse Auction Co. Inc. announced last week it would hold a two-part, sealed-bid receivership auction for “essentially all” of the company’s assets on Aug. 22. Those assets include a 45,780-square-foot manufacturing facility at 119 Metrolina Drive and nearly 12.7 acres.

Mafic announced in 2016 its plan to invest $15 million in the facility, which is the former Metrolina Plastics Inc. building. The company intended to employ 113 people there. Mafic’s Shelby operations began in 2020.
