Officials said he went to a campsite in Burke County last spring and told children there that he was an FBI agent.

A father of the children at the campsite saw Pennington speaking to his children and heard him tell them he was an FBI agent, according to authorities. When the father confronted Pennington, he left the campsite in a vehicle.

That vehicle was spotted in Caldwell County and stopped. Deputies arrested Pennington and transported him back to Burke County where he was taken into custody.

Pennington was convicted in Caldwell County earlier this year for bringing a handgun to two elementary schools.
