Man sentenced in SouthPark jogger’s shooting

CHARLOTTE — A judge has sentenced a man in the 2023 shooting of a jogger in a SouthPark neighborhood to more than ten years in prison.

The shooting happened in Sept. 2023 on Sharon Road, near Myers Park. Police reports said a man was jogging when another man – later identified as Stephen Montgomery – randomly approached the jogger, pulled a gun on him, and then shot him in the hand and leg.

The jogger survived and soon after, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department identified Montgomery as the suspect. Authorities confirmed Montgomery and the victim didn’t know each other.

Police said Montgomery, a convicted felon who had a stolen gun, fired multiple shots, including hitting a car that was driving by on Sharon Road.

The Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office said Montgomery, 34, ultimately pled guilty to multiple charges including first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

For the assault and firearm charges, Montgomery was sentenced to 127-165 months in prison. For the remaining charges, he was sentenced to 110-144 months in prison. The DA’s Office said those sentences will run concurrently.
