CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A 75-year-old man has been sentenced to up to 11 years in prison after being convicted of assault charges on Monday.
During Catawba County Superior Court, Jimmy Lee Randolph pled guilty to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, and an additional count of assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injury.
The incident occurred while Randolph was out of prison after serving 33 years for a 1990 murder conviction.
Following his release, Randolph befriended a woman at a job he was working. That woman then helped him get used to living outside of prison, and he assisted her with some of her financial obligations, according to court documents.
However, at some point, the woman began dating another man. In September 2023, Randolph attacked the woman, the man, and the man’s 3-year-old son with a 13-inch kitchen knife.
According to court documents, Randolph told a 911 dispatcher that he committed the assault. The knife used in the incident was also found in his apartment.
Randolph will serve his sentence at the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections.
Judge Eady-Williams ordered the sentence to run at the expiration of his parole revocation, which will be addressed at a future hearing.
