CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — The father of a 7-year-old boy killed in a crash on Interstate 77 has been released from the hospital.
That crash happened as the family was driving home on I-77 North in Chester County earlier in July. Corey Shanks was driving his SUV on I-77 when detectives say another driver, Jason Palmer, plowed into the back of his SUV.
Detectives say Palmer appeared to be impaired and was driving nearly 90 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
7-year-old Max Shanks, who was in the car with his dad, was killed. His dad, Corey, was critically hurt.
South Carolina Reporter Tina Terry spoke to the boy’s mom, Jessica, on Friday morning. She isn’t ready to talk on camera, but she told Terry her husband is thankfully out of the hospital and in a rehabilitation facility recovering from that crash. She said even though her husband is improving, he still needs the community’s prayers and support.
As for Jason Palmer, he was denied bond and is still in a South Carolina jail. Before the crash, Palmer had several previous arrests and was out on bond for another crime in Mecklenburg County.
Court records in Mecklenburg County show that Palmer has pending charges for failure to report a death.
The solicitor says he was out on bond at the time of the crash.
