Man hospitalized after being struck by Lancaster County sheriff’s vehicle

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — A 32-year-old man was hospitalized Wednesday night after being struck by a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle on U.S. 521 near Kershaw, the sheriff said. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.

The crash occurred at 10:02 p.m. near the B & J Mini Mart as an on-duty deputy was driving a marked 2025 Ford Explorer south on U.S. 521/Kershaw Camden Highway approaching Kershaw. Sheriff’s officials confirmed the deputy was not responding to a call for service at the time of the incident.

Following the collision, the deputy immediately stopped, called for assistance and rendered aid to the injured man. Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived at the scene, assumed care of the pedestrian and transported him to a medical facility. The pedestrian was alert and responsive after the crash, though his current medical condition is unknown. The deputy was not injured and the patrol car sustained minor damage.

A trooper with the South Carolina Highway Patrol arrived shortly after the incident to lead the investigation. Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile stated his agency will assist state investigators and wished the injured man a quick recovery.

“Our best wishes are extended to young man involved in this collision and we hope he fully recovers soon,” Faile said. “We will provide the Highway Patrol all the information we have on this collision and will cooperate fully with their investigation.”

The deputy is on paid leave as standard operating procedure, the sheriff’s office stated.

There will be drug and alcohol testing, as per protocol.

The results of the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigation are expected in several days.
