CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police said a man and child were hospitalized after they were hit by a car in west Charlotte on Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called around 11 a.m. to West Boulevard, between Old Steele Creek Road and West Tyvola Road. Police said a man was holding a baby when he was hit by the car.

An employee at the Mystik gas station witnessed the accident.

A woman was with the man and the baby, but she was not injured, police said.

“It was a regular couple,” the employee, who did not want to be identified, said. “They come here all the time, boyfriend and girlfriend and their baby. She's no more than two months old.

Police said the driver had just made a left turn onto West Boulevard from Old Steele Creek Road.

“When she hit him, his body flipped and that's how the baby flew up and she hit the ground,” the employee said. "At first, I thought it was a bag or something until I (saw the) mom. As soon as she was (holding a baby), I knew it was the baby.”

The employee said she called 911.

“They were telling me what to do with her and the baby,” the employee said. “Telling me to tell mom not to let the baby doze off.”

Police said the driver stayed at the scene.

The employee said she was glad she was there to help and hopes her customers will be OK.

“I look forward to them coming back into the store,” she said. “I just want to hug her and say, ‘Thank God y'all are OK.’”

Paramedics said the victims were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
