KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A man is dead after being hit by an Amtrak train early Thursday morning in Kannapolis.

Police said a train heading to New Orleans hit 59-year-old Terry Ray Jeffery around 2:45 a.m. on East C Street near Main Street.
The conductor told police that Jeffery was standing on the track with his back toward the train and didn't move as it approached.
No passengers on the train were injured in the crash.
