CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating after a man was hit and killed by a car on the Brookshire Freeway in north Charlotte late Tuesday night.
The crash happened around 9 p.m. on the Brookshire between Tryon Street and Interstate 77.
MEDIC took the victim to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center, but he later died from his injuries. He has not been identified.
Investigators said a car was traveling northwest on Brookshire Freeway in the far left lane when the man was hit. He was walking in a poorly lit area, in the roadway with his back to oncoming traffic before he was struck, according to officials.
Authorities said the driver slammed on her brakes but was unable to avoid hitting the man. Another sedan then struck the car from behind. The drivers of both cars and one passenger were not hurt.
Officials said the outer loop of Brookshire between Tryon Street and I-77 was shut down for several hours while authorities continued their investigation.
