Man found shot to death in woods outside of Lancaster home, deputies say

LANCASTER, S.C. — Lancaster County deputies are investigating after they found a man dead in the woods across from his home Tuesday morning.

Deputies said they were called just after 8:30 a.m. to a home on Deason Lane, about three miles from Buford High school, for reports of gunfire.

When they arrived, they found a 38-year-old Kristopher Rumsey in the woods across the dirt road from the home. He appeared to have been shot, deputies said. He died at the scene.

Deputies said they believe the man and another person at the home were armed and both fired their guns. Neither of their identities will be released at this time, authorities said.

Deputies said an autopsy will be conducted later in the week.

No arrests have been made and authorities are not looking for another shooter. They also said there is no current threat to the public.

“This incident just occurred, and the investigation is in its early stages,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “Although several people were present and we believe they will be able to give us a full accounting of what happened, it will take our investigators some time to thoroughly interview them, process the scene, and collect the evidence. We will release more information as it becomes available and when it is appropriate to do so.”

Deputies asked anyone with information to call the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office at 803-283-3388. The public can also call Midlands Crimestoppers at 888-CRIME-SC, or click here.
