Man finds grenade in basement of Lincolnton home

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — A man in Lincolnton found a grenade in his basement Sunday night, police said.

Jeffrey Huffman was working on some piping in the basement of his house on Car Farm Road when he knocked over a box that fell 8 feet to the ground.

When the box hit the floor, a grenade that was green and shaped like a pineapple popped out of the box, breaking the pin, Huffman said.

The grenade had been in a box with RC airplanes that were given to him by his grandmother.

Officers said the grenade appeared to be from the World War II era but had no markings on it to identify it as a training or explosive grenade.

Officials decided to call in the Gaston County Bomb Squad, which determined the grenade was not dangerous since the primer and powder had been removed from it.

Huffman agreed to allow the Gaston County Bomb Squad to take the grenade and use it as a training aid, and they said they would destroy it.
