BESSEMER CITY, NC — A fire at a campground in Bessemer City killed a man and his dog early Sunday morning, according to Gaston County police.

Gaston County police and Bessemer City Police responded to Long Creek Road around 4:15 a.m. and found a camper fully engulfed in flames, authorities said.
After containing the fire, firefighters were able to access the inside the camper.
Fire crews found 71-year-old Steven Michael Grigg dead inside of the camper.
Grigg was the only person in the camper. His dog also died in the fire.

Police said the fire was accidental, but the exact cause is unknown.
The fire is under investigation by the Gaston County Fire Marshall’s Office.
Eight other agencies assisted the police departments.
