BADIN, N.C. — The community is asking to see police video of the confrontation between law enforcement and a man who died after officials said he was shocked with a Taser during a fight with law enforcement in Stanly County.
The Badin police chief said a person called 911 Thursday morning to ask for assistance at the intersection of Dewey and Mayo streets.
A man identified as Marlon Lewis, 37, described as "highly agitated," fought with a Badin police officer when the officer arrived, the police chief said. Two Stanly County deputies were called to the scene to assist the officer.
Lewis' sister said the father of two called 911 for help and told police someone was trying to kill him.
The police chief told Channel 9 that at some point, the officers tried to subdue Lewis by deploying a Taser. It’s not clear whether the officer or one of the deputies used the Taser.
Lewis' sister told Channel 9's Mark Barber that law enforcement members told her family that Lewis was shocked three times with the Taser. Neither the police department or the sheriff's office have confirmed that information to Channel 9.
The sheriff told Channel 9 that two Tasers were deployed during the confrontation with Lewis but it's unclear if any of them made contact.
The Taser had no effect on Lewis, the police chief said, and the officers wrestled him to the ground in an attempt to subdue him.
The police chief said Lewis went into cardiac arrest and died.
Family members told Channel 9 that Lewis appeared to be in good health so they don't understand why he died.
"We were all caught off guard because it's one of those moments you talk to them not too long ago and it's real, it hurts," said Lewis' nephew Mitchell Johnson.
The SBI is investigating.
The police chief said the officer is on administrative leave. The Stanly County Sheriff's Office said the two deputies are also on administrative leave pending the investigation.
